Pilgrims Week 5

Our read-aloud is Pilgrim Stories by Margaret Pumphrey.

Our Bible verse: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; his love endures forever." (Psalm 107:1)

Monday
GOD'S NAMES
Jehovah-Or, The Lord is Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5)

"God is light" means God is full of goodness and holiness.  There is no evil or sin in God.

But people aren't this way, are we?  There is sin and evil in everyone's heart.  John said:

"Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil."  John 3:19

In 2 Samuel 11-12:25 it tells of David who admires a beautiful woman who is bathing while he is dancing on the roof of the palace. He slept with this woman, Bathsheba, who was wed to another.  David knew he was sinning and that it was wrong.  Instead of running to God and asking for forgiveness David tried to hide his sin.  David sinned again when he had Bathsheba's husband killed.  Now he held in his heart more dark sin.

God sent Nathan to David. Nathan told David of a story about a rich man who stole a sheep from a poor man.  David became angry against the man and declared that man should die!

Then Nathan replied, "You are the man!"  Jehovah-Or, the Lord Is Light, had shown David the sin in his own heart.  David ran to the Lord admitted his sin and asked for forgiveness.

Jehovah-Or, the Lord is Light, shines His light into our sinful hearts.  He shows us His goodness and gives us a love for the light.

Activity: How can we as a family show others that God is Jehovah-Or, the Lord is Light?

HISTORY
We read A Narrow Escape and A Savage People.

I created a fill in the blank sheet for Micah and Lauren on the five requirements the Pilgrims had for land that would be good to build their new homes on.  Hannah had to write a summary.

I gave them a map puzzle. Hannah's was to be completed the same day and I had Micah and Lauren work on a column a day.  http://www.mediafire.com/view/?iik9oi6h89yfaae and http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mosmd/makeamap.jpg . This was great for the kids to practice learning their north, south, west and east.

Tuesday
GOD'S NAMES
Jehovah-Shalom, The Lord is Peace
We read about Gideon in Judges 6-8 and how God gave Gideon peace and God gave Israel peace with its enemies.
God also gives other kinds of peace, too.  "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." (Isaiah 26:3)
But there is an even better kind of peace that Jehovah-Shalom gives-peace with Him.  Jehovah-Shalom, The Lord is Peace, made peace with man through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."
(Isaiah 53:5)
HISTORY
We read Plymouth Bay and The First Winter in Plymouth.
We did a notebook page/vocabulary on island and thatched roof.
Lauren drew a picture of Mary Chilton stepping onto Plymouth Rock.
While Hannah gave Lauren a bath spa treatment Micah made a Pilgrim window.

We also worked on a passenger and crew death math worksheet.

Wednesday
GOD'S NAMES
Judge of the Whole Earth
For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
We read Revelations 21:1-22:5 and Matthew 13:40-43 and Romans 8:1
HISTORY
We read the chapter Samoset.
NATURE STUDY
Today we went to the farm and studied trees.  In the chapters this week we have been discussing different trees the Pilgrims came across in the new land; so I thought it would be fun to go discover a few trees on the farm.  Our sweet friends Jamie, Noah, and Roman joined us.
We first showed them some chopped Post Oak and Live Oak.  We used this chopped wood to discuss the inside of a tree.  What we covered is on the following sheet.
It was amazing to see how  different the two kinds of oaks are.  The Post Oak was smooth and straight while the Live Oak had deeper pores and a more irregular grain.  It has a mixture of hard and softer grain and the higher rigids make it harder to get it smooth if you it for building anything.
We walked around and showed the kids Cedar trees, Pecan trees, Live Oaks, Post Oaks, Yaupon trees, a Huisach tree and a China Berry tree.
 Yaupon
 China Berry
Huisach
We had the kids pick a tree that they wanted to draw and label the outside tree parts.  Four of the kids chose a young Red Oak.  Granpa didn't know if it was a Red Oak or a Bur Oak so the kids used our tree guide to discover which one it was.   They determined it was a Red Oak because its leaves had tooth pointed lobes and the leaves were a red color.  You can get the tree part labels at
Hannah drew a Pecan Tree, Micah drew a Cedar, and the rest of the kids drew the Northern Red Oak tree.
After they drew their pictures we read the poem "Tree Feelings" by Charlotte Stetson, obtained out of my book The Handbook of Nature Study.
The kids frolicking at the creek.
This was a cool spot.  The ground was eroding.  You could see all the roots of the surrounding trees underground.  The kids jumped in from up top.  They called it the IZ spot.  A blend of the Ischys and the Zimmermans.
Thursday
NAMES OF GOD
Jehovah-Maginnenu, The Lord Our Defense
"You are my refuge and my shield." (Psalm 119:114)
"Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield." (Psalm 33:20)
We read about Moses, Miriam, and Aaron in Numbers 12:1-16.
Hannah had a really good question.  She asked, "How come Aaron didn't get leprosy like Miriam?"  I thought it was an excellent question but I didn't have the answer and the commentary we had at home didn't cover this topic/question.  We had to call daddy and get his help.  He told us the best reason was:

That Miriam rather than Aaron was plagued by the disease reinforces the gender specific implication of the initial verb in v. 1 that Miriam was the chief instigator of the dispute.
Miriam was struck with a leprosy, but not Aaron, because she was first in the transgression, and God would put a difference between those that mislead and those that are misled. Aaron’s office, though it saved him not from God’s displeasure, yet helped to secure him from this token of his displeasure, which would not only have suspended him for the present from officiating, when (there being no priests but himself and his two sons) he could ill be spared, but it would have rendered him and his office mean, and would have been a lasting blot upon his family. Aaron as priest was to be the judge of the leprosy, and his performing that part of his office upon this occasion, when he looked upon Miriam, and behold she was leprous, was a sufficient mortification to him. He was struck through her side, and could not pronounce her leprous without blushing and trembling, knowing himself to be equally obnoxious. This judgment upon Miriam is improvable by us as a warning to take heed of putting any affront upon our Lord Jesus. If she was thus chastised for speaking against Moses, what will become of those that sin against Christ?

 Micah's shield

Lauren's picture of her holding a shield while a boy is throwing snowballs at her.
SURPRISE
For Lauren's birthday daddy brought home from Pearland the girls best friends.  When he got home he said, "Girls I saw some new kittens on teh front porch go check it out."  When they opened the door it was KK and Mattie with bows on their heads.  All I heard was screaming!  Lauren was so excited.
Friday
Today all the girls and Micah went and served at Meals on Wheels with daddy while I stayed home and made Lauren's favorite cake for her birthday.  Jaimie and her boys came over and celebrated with us.
Happy 9th Birthday
Lauren

GOD MOMENT
This week in my time alone with the Lord it seemed cold and lonely.  I was in the Word but nothing was penetrating into my heart.  Thursday I cried out to Adonai, The Lord, pleading that I couldn't stand the separation, I needed Him.  I knew something wasn't right on my part and there was something I needed to do. After crying out to the Lord I felt the conviction from the Holy Spirit that I needed to examine my heart, my attitude, my words and deeds; then repent of my sins and receive His mercy and forgiveness and He would wash me white as snow.
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
(Psalm 51:1-12)
As I began writing out my convictions I was reminded of how filthy I am and deserve Hell, but Praise God the Judge of the Whole Earth has given us the gift of Jesus. "There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1)
After repenting of my sins I truly felt white as snow.  As I drew near to Him in His Word I could feel His presence, there was peace within me and my lips and my mouth declared praises unto Him.
If you ever cease to understand the value of repentance, you allow yourself to remain in sin.  Examine yourself to see if you have forgotten how to be truly repentant.

Pilgrims Week 4

Our read-aloud for the month is Pilgrim Stories by Margaret Pumphrey.

Tuesday
NAMES OF GOD

A Strong Tower
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe" (Proverbs 18:10)

We imagined running into a strong tower to get out of a terrible storm.  What does the tower do for us?  It keeps us safe.

But does the tower keep us safe if we don't run into it? No, if we stay outside in the storm, we can't get the help or protection of the tower.  You have to run inside.  And to get God's protection, we have to run to Him, too.

We listened to this song and the kids drew themselves running into a tower.

Hannah's

HISTORY
We read the chapter The Voyage of the "Mayflower".

Lauren and Micah drew Mayflower ships as I read the chapter.

Micah's

Hannah did a notebooking page.  Page can be found at www.cyncesplace.com

The kids also completed an English flag worksheet  http://www.mediafire.com/view/?ov9fvfxcmkxof9x.

ART
We then viewed the following picture and went over the discussion questions I added to the bottom of their picture. (You can obtain the picture and questions at the link below)

In our reading today it talked of John Howland, who was flung into the sea by the waves.

Wednesday
NAMES OF GOD
Jehovah-Sabaoth,The Lord of Hosts

"You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (1 Samuel 17:45)

David saw a big giant and his army but he knew God was even bigger and stronger.  David knew that God is Jehovah-Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts.  A "host" is an army.  God has hosts of angels, armies of angels, that He can send to fight for His people and for His great name.

Today I made a word search puzzle off the Internet with all the names of God we have learned this far.

HISTORY
We read chapters Water Babies, Land, and The First Washing Day in New England.
I gave the kids a picture of Cape Cod and the boot shaped peninsula of Massachusetts along with some data.  We learned what a peninsula was when we studied Italy, so this was great review of their geography terms.

We then went over "The First Explorations."  This covered three photos of Cape Cod as the Pilgrims might have first seen it.  http://www.mediafire.com/view/?k5qi8h5zxdxipnq

Lauren and Micah drew pictures of their favorite parts of the chapter The First Washing Day in New England.

Thursday
NAMES OF GOD
Jehovah-Jireh, The Lord Will Provide

We read the story of Abraham and Isaac.
Genesis 22: 1-19

Then we all shared how God has provided for our family.  This was such a beautiful time around the table.

HISTORY
We read the chapter A Wild Land.

We learned another symbol of Thanksgiving is corn.  The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn and helped them survive the bitter winter of 1620.

We snacked on popcorn while the kids built their wigwam.

Our first attempt we followed ehow.com on how to make wigwams, this was not successful. Our mud paste kept sliding down our bowl. This site said wigwams were made from earth, sticks, water and animal skins.

The woodland Indians built wigwams out of mud, sticks, water and animal skins for shelter during a hunting exposition, then left it when they moved on to the next place.

Read more: How to Make a Wigwam Diorama | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how_6332091_make-wigwam-diorama.html#ixzz2Dk9tUVJV

Lexi really enjoyed playing in the mud.  In this picture she said she was dumping the mud out of the glass.  We had mud all over the kitchen.

So after a little more research online we found another link that said wigwams were made of wooden frames which are covered with woven mats and sheets of birchbark.  The frame could be shaped like a dome, like a cone, or like a rectangle with an arched roof.  Below is a copy of the information and pictures we found.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?lftm73r32m9io8y

So we decided to go about our own way of making the wigwams.  We took Styrofoam balls cut them in fourths and glued them to paper plates.  Then we hunted for bendable branches in the yard to make their frames. The kids had to finish the rest on their own.

Here is what they came up with.

Friday

Today we mainly focused on our basics of Math, Reading and English.  To be honest I just felt tired.

The only thing we did in reference to the Pilgrims was a picture study and poem on

The Landing Pilgrim Fathers.

You can find it at http://cyncesplace.com/thanksgiving.html

Micah and Lauren completed the first five questions and Hannah had to complete all 13 questions and was assigned to write a paper on Monday using the outline and questions from cycnesplace.com

GOD MOMENT
Last week our young ladies study group made books of the lies that they believe about themselves.  After they made it we burned them and prayed for the girls to know and trust in the Truth.

Then the girls used scrapbook supplies to create a book of Truths for their lives.  I reminded them not to put their words but God's because there is only power in His Word.

Hannah and another girl missed last week so she came over and we did it with them.

Hannah had the lie that she couldn't be herself around others.  This really hit me hard because I am the one who has flamed that lie.  My sweet Hannah can be quite quirky, funny, imaginative and odd at times.  We love that about her.  She always has us laughing and it those traits that I believe make her such a creative writer and great at orchestrating plays.

Someone who doesn't know Hannah I thought might look upon her differently and be mean to her, so the times Hannah has asked me if she can be REALLY goofy around new people I would say, "I would around your close friends but not someone you don't know well."

These words I spoke in trying to protect are the very words that brought harm to her.

God revealed to me that I am not her Strong Tower, He is.  She is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) that she is His masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10) and if she is crazy it is for God (2 Cor. 5:13).

I will no longer tell Hannah not to be herself around anyone.  I praise God for His workmanship and if someone else can't appreciate her sense of humor or if someone is unkind to her with words or lies  it won't matter, because she will know the TRUTH.

The next morning I asked Hannah for her forgiveness and we prayed His TRUTH over her.  Then she created a book of Truths to keep close by.
