Pilgrims Week 1

So this month we are putting Rome to Reformation to the side and attempting to throw together our own hodgepodge of stuff on the Pilgrims.  Ha Ha, we will see how this turns out.  Many of the maps and images came from http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mosmd/index.htm.  Each child created a notebook with a table of contents to add all their data and creative work into.

For the month of November we are also learning the names of God.  I'm praying that in this month of counting our blessings the kids and myself will have a new perspective and transformed hearts.

Our read-aloud for the month is Pilgrim Stories by Margaret Pumphrey.

Additional reads, in reference to the Pilgrims and names of God, for the month:

Our BIBLE VERSE this week:
We are receiving a kingdom that can't be shaken.  So let us be thankful.
Hebrews 12:28

The kids were to copy the verse and memorize it.

Monday
Daddy and I got home late from a weekend in the wilderness.

Tuesday
Family attended Renaissance Festival together.

HISTORY
We read chapters: At Scrooby Inn and A Royal guest
  1. We discussed who James I, Queen Anne of Denmark, and the Separatists were.  I also gave them a picture of Bradford but asked them to hold off on writing about him.

Coloring page of King James 1

Notebook Pages

2. I handed them a picture of the only remaining wing of the original Scrooby Manor House.  William Brewster resided here and this is the place where the Pilgrims first met in secret following their separation from the church of England.

3. We labeled England on our map of Early Journeys of the Pilgrims

4. We read our letters we received from a Wampanoag child and a Pilgrim child name Lizzy.
We signed up to receive them at http://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/ .

SCIENCE/NUTRITION
We discussed the nutritional value in pumpkins and that it is one the symbols of Thanksgiving.
I printed the page from http://cyncesplace.com/thanksgiving.html and added the nutritional value.

Micah working on his pumpkin observation sheet.
I can't remember where we got ours, but there are several online.
On the back side Micah and Lauren had to write a complete sentence using three adjectives describing their pumpkin.  They also had to measure the height and the circumference of the pumpkin.

Since this was quite an easy assignment for Hannah to do, she was instead to write a limerick about our pumpkin.

Lexi creating art on the pumpkin.

Lauren was trying to do her pumpkin observations and Lexi wanted to make
the pumpkin beautiful. Lauren was infuriated with Lexi.  lol

GOD'S NAMES

Elohim, Strong Creator

Ah, Lord God!  It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm!  Nothing is too hard for you.  (Jeremiah 32:17)
Cut up ten small pieces of paper and number them 1-10.  Insert them in a bag or Ziploc bag.  Blow some air into it, twist it, then have the kids pop the bag.  Did it make a big BANG?

Dump out the paper numbers.  Were they lined up straight?  Were they all right side up?  Were they in order from 1 - 10?

No, they weren't.  Our world is like that, too.  Someone had to create the world and put it in order.  That someone is our Elohim, Strong Creator.

I then instructed the kids to draw, take a picture, print a picture, do whatever they wanted that showed something God created that they were THANKFUL for.

Micah created a fish using the origami technique.
Here is the back side of his fish.
Hannah printed a picture.

HISTORY
First we reviewed what we learned yesterday, then
we read the chapter Meeting in Secret.

We wrote on our note-book pages what we have learned thus far about Elder Brewster and John Robinson.

IN THE KTCHEN
We processed our pumpkin, so we could make pumpkin pie.  Next week we will use the balance of our pumpkin to make pumpkin bread for others.

Each of the kids estimated how many seeds were in the butternut squash and the pumpkin.
We put them in a jar and will count them on Thanksgiving.  Whoever is closest will get a surprise.

My little chefs hard at work.

We are making a butter crust for our pumpkin pie.

recipe:
2-1/2 cups of all purpose flour, 2 sticks of butter (frozen), 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, 4 tbsp chilled ice water.
Add in food processor then mix with hand to form.
Chill for 2 hours before handling.

 Lauren rolling out the dough.

Cooked our pumpkin and butternut.  Now taking off the skin,
so we can puree it.  Butternut squash is sweeter than pumpkin and gives your pumpkin a little darker orange color, so we used half and half of each.

The kids finished pie.  Awesome job!

GOD'S NAMES
Jehovah, Yahweh, I AM

We reviewed the story of Moses and the burning bush.

But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?”  God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.”  God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.
This is my eternal name,
my name to remember for all generations.
(Exodus 3:13-15 NLT)

We talked about how this bush burned and burned, but never burned up.  If we burn wood it does burn up because the wood burns up. God used the burning, never-burned out bush to show Moses something about himself-that He is unchanging and self-existent.

We learned that Jehovah is Latin and Yahweh is Hebrew.

The kids were to then create something thanking Yahweh.

Lauren drew Moses and the burning bush.

When you lift the flap the bush is no longer burning nor burned up.

Hannah wrote  personal letter to Yahweh and Micah wrote who Yahweh was.

While the others were working on their Yahweh pictures, Lexi was making a soldier.
She said it needed boogers. LOL
Can you tell Lexi is wearing something else?  She changes about 15 times a day.

WHAT ELSE???
This week we started practicing American the Beautiful.  The kids are going to sing it at the Thanksgiving lunch for the seniors, at the community center.

After singing they will each recite a verse from the Bible.

Hannah's: Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted...let this be known to all the world.  (Isaiah 12:4-5)

Laurens: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1 NIV)

Micah's: Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
(1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT)

Friday

Well we started the day off with a healthy balanced breakfast.

NOT!
The kids worked so hard preparing and baking the pie and didn't even  get to enjoy it yesterday.  We didn't remove  it from the oven until 9:00PM, so I told the kids they could have it for breakfast.  I didn't hear any arguments.

GOD'S NAMES
El Shaddai, God Almighty

I am God Almighty; walk before me blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly. (Genesis 17:1-2)

We talked about the story of Abram and Sarai and that they gave birth to a son in their old age.
We discussed many different mighty acts God performed: parting the sea, flooding the earth and drying it up, bringing the dead to life, healing the blind, quieting a storm.
God can do anything, nothing is to hard for him.

O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand.  For what god is there in heaven or earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? (Deuteronomy 3:24)

We then sat around the table and talked about mighty acts God has done in our lives.  I then had the kids write and/or draw one of the things they mentioned at the table.

HISTORY
We read the chapter Pilgrims.
We added Holland to our map.
Lauren's map
We will continue to add to it as it is discussed in the book.

We added three new vocabulary notebook pages to our notebook.

I gave Hannah an additional assignment with the purpose of learning the background and meaning of the country's "unofficial" national anthem, "American the Beautiful." This is due before Thanksgiving.
  • We discussed the meaning of the 1st verse.  She is to memorize entire song to sing at the community center.
  • To read the history of "America the Beautiful."
  • To draw/and or cut our magazine pictures of American landscape and create a visual map or collage of the country and its varied landscapes, natural features, resources, crops, etc.
  • To write a poem using her own words about America.
